Face to Face

X-Post spoke to Prof. Subhajyoti Ray, Dean (Academics) on a wide range of issues. Following are excerpts from the interview:

X-POST: Many congratulations from the X-Post team, Sir, on your appointment as Dean (Academics). What is your vision as Dean (Academics)?

Prof: Subhajyoti Ray: I would like to see academic diversity in XIMB on all fronts. XIMB would have students and faculty from across cultures and countries as well as offer a bouquet of programmes within the broad discipline of management that will be uparalled by our peers.

XP: As the Dean (Academics), what are the changes you would like to introduce for our Alumni?

PSR: The alumni are one of the most important stakeholders of the institute and their involvement is critical to achieving the vision of the institute. Even though we do a lot of activities that engage alumni continually there is room for much more. The goal is to have a seamless interaction between alumni and the institute. I believe that technology can play a significant role in this effort. On the other front I would also like to see X-post including a write-up by an alumnus. This I believe will create a stronger bond between the institute and alumni and hopefully lead to mutual gains.

XP: These days we find many students going after placements rather than seeking knowledge. What are your views regarding this?

PSR:  In my view it is an outcome of impatience and short sightedness. There is no substitute to hard work and knowledge. Students should appreciate that these two years are often the last year of systematic education. Income is closely related to human capital. In the long term knowledge can only help you to achieve which otherwise seemed impossible. groups and organizations.

XP: What has been one major learning after your coming to XIMB?

PSR: It has been a fascinating journey parsed with observation, analysis, action, mistakes and learning. I have seen what can be achieved if right environment is provided to anybody.  At the same time I am aware of the ever increasing challenges of aligning the objectives of individuals with those of groups and organizations.

XP: Would you like to offer any advice for the students?

PSR:  a) Get out your comfort zone to realize your true potential

          b) You cannot avoid dealing with people. Learn it.

          c) Recession or no Recession - "Business as Usual" rarely works. Unlearn, Change, Move ahead.
